Romo Headed To IR; Garrett Not Ruling Out Showers For Active Roster

IRVING, Texas – With the playoffs officially out of reach, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett confirmed that Tony Romo will be heading to injured reserve this week.

Romo is one of two players the Cowboys will move to IR this week during their preparations for the Week 16 trip to Buffalo.

"We do anticipate putting Tony on IR -- and also Gavin Escobar, who tore his Achilles tendon -- and we don't know what we're going to do with those spots yet," Garrett said.

It's been nearly a month since Romo broke his clavicle during the Week 12 loss to Carolina on Nov. 26, but the Cowboys had left him on the active roster. Their lingering playoff hopes in a lackluster NFC East gave cause for hope that he might return for a possible playoff berth. With that possibility officially ruled out, there's no cause to fill the roster spot.

Now, the question is how the coaching staff will opt to use those two roster spots. With two weeks remaining in the season, Garrett said there's still the option to pursue players from other practice squads. But faced with that possibility, he mentioned that he was intrigued by several members of his own practice squad, as well.

"We can go get guys. We're excited and hopefully see a couple of guys on our team right now. But we're in those discussions as we speak," he said. "We'll figure out what the whole landscape looks like and make our best decisions."

One of those decisions might involve practice squad quarterback Jameill Showers. The rookie garnered some notoriety for his play during the preseason, and Garrett confirmed that he could be in consideration for an active roster spot these final two weeks.

As is usually the case, any potential roster moves will likely come later in the week, as the Cowboys ease into their preparations for the Bills.
