Garrett: Romo To Have Tests On Injured Back; Team Mulls Short-Term IR Option

FRISCO, Texas– Tony Romo will undergo more tests on his injured back this week as the Cowboys look to decide in the next 48 hours whether to keep the veteran quarterback on the 53-man roster or place him on the injured reserve list with the intent to activate him later in the season, head coach Jason Garrett said Monday.

"We're going to continue to gather information here in the next couple days on Tony and just see what his status is," Garrett said. "Currently he's on the 53-man roster. We'll get some more information here over the next 48 hours and make a determination as to what his status will be going forward."

The Cowboys expect Romo to return at some point this season from the fractured bone he suffered in his back in the first quarter of the Aug. 25 preseason game at Seattle. If he's placed on injured reserve, he would miss the first eight weeks of the season before he's eligible to return to game action in Week 9.

"My understanding is there's not a deadline," Garrett said. "We can take the next couple days and the reason we want to take the next couple days is we want to make sure it's enough time out from the original injury. That's when we're going to get the most information."

Rookie Dak Prescott will start while Romo is sidelined. For experienced backup depth, the Cowboys signed Mark Sanchez on Sunday and waived first-year quarterback Jameill Showers.

Sanchez, a career 72-game starter with the Jets and Eagles, will practice Monday.

"Mark's been a good player in this league," Garrett said. "He's been a starting quarterback. He's been to the playoffs as a starting quarterback. He's started a lot of games. He was a very successful college quarterback. We played against him in our division, so we've seen him up close. He's an experienced guy who has a lot of ability."
