CB Depth Bolstered With 2 Picks; Jones Shuts Down Scandrick Trade Rumor

Looking into Friday's Day 2 forecast, Cowboys VP Stephen Jones basically said what was going to happen on Thursday night.

He said there were a lot of cornerbacks still available and hinted strongly the Cowboys would take one on Friday.

How about two?

The Cowboys picked up both Chidobe Awuzie (Colorado) and Jourdan Lewis (Michigan) in the second and third rounds, respectively.

And if that wasn't enough, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made sure to squash a budding rumor that Orlando Scandrick was being shopped in a potential trade.

"Absolutely not. That's completely erroneous," Jones said. "Orlando is a valued member of our team."

Jones even said he would probably call Scandrick by the end of the weekend to reassure his stance on the team.

But if that truly is the case, regardless what happens on Day 3 of the draft with rounds 4-7 and the undrafted free agents, the Cowboys have now added plenty of depth to the cornerback spot.

Jason Garrett said Awuzie, who has some position flex to play safety, will likely start out at corner, giving the Cowboys a healthy number of cover guys.

With Scandrick, Nolan Carroll and Anthony Brown – along with Awuzie and Lewis, the Cowboys could easily line up and play a game now with the secondary players they have acquired.

"We felt good about coming in here and getting some depth at that position," head coach Jason Garrett said. "We don't really know where everyone is going to start out right now. Wed just want them to get in here and get to work."

The players will come to The Star for a rookie minicamp in two weeks and will then prepare for the offseason practices of OTA sessions and a full-squad minicamp.
