FRISCO –The Cowboys went back to work Sunday afternoon at The Star in their "Wednesday" mode as they prepare for another Thursday night game this week against the Redskins.
But after three straight losses and seeing an abundance of big plays allowed on defense, head coach Jason Garrett made it clear there will likely be some changes in the secondary. If anything else, some competition here in practice this week.
When asked directly if Anthony Brown would remain a starter at cornerback, Garrett responded with, "we haven't made any final determination on anything about roster spots but we're going to create some competition on our team."
Garrett said rookie Chidobe Awuzie will "certainly get some opportunities at the corner spot," along with veteran Bene Binwikere and Jourdan Lewis. Veteran Orlando Scandrick will remain one of the starters and has experience in the slot.
Last week against the Chargers, Philip Rivers torched the Cowboys' secondary for 11 plays of at least 15 yards, including at least one on every offensive drive.
The Cowboys have yielded 27 points or more in three straight games, although the last two weeks have included defensive touchdowns by the opponent.
This week, the Cowboys take on a Washington team that managed to score just 19 points in the first meeting between the two back in late October. That game saw a steady downpour of rain from start to finish, along with the Redskins missing nearly their entire starting offensive line.
But Washington still has plenty of explosive weapons in the passing game, led by quarterback Kirk Cousins.
