FRISCO, Texas – Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones spoke to 105.3 The Fan for his weekly radio show on Tuesday and covered a lot of pressing subjects surrounding the Cowboys.
As Jones was getting ready for this week's NFL owner's meetings in New York City, he discussed whether or not those meetings are places that can help foster a trade, if a trade is on the horizon ahead of the deadline that sits two weeks away on November 4, and gave the latest on Trevon Diggs.
Let's take a look at that and more of what Jones had to say:
Latest on CB Trevon Diggs
Last Friday, Brian Schottenheimer started his press conference by announcing that Trevon Diggs would be out for Sunday's game against the Commanders after suffering a concussion in an accident at his home.
Following Sunday's victory, Jones told reporters that Diggs had explained to him what had occurred and he expected Diggs to be back soon. On Monday, Schottenheimer said Diggs was still in concussion protocol and team doctors sent him home after evaluating him. Was Jones satisfied with the explanation Diggs gave him for the concussion?
"Yes, I am," Jones said. "There's no reason to dwell on it anymore here. It's what it is. Consequently, what we did see is we played pretty well out there. I don't know the status of Diggs as we move forward, but I feel better about being able to play if we don't have him out there."
Will the Cowboys make a trade before the deadline?
In regard to a trade, Jones said multiple times after the win on Sunday that the Cowboys' performance didn't make him more eager to try and make a trade to improve the defense and capitalize on having the league's #1 offense. That said, they'll always evaluate all the options in front of them.
"You don't just because we played well and all of a sudden everybody thinks, 'Boy, you're in the hunt, so it's time to go out and gather up all of this talent that's waiting around out here on the trees to add to it…'" Jones said.
"That's not realistic. What's realistic is that if we do see an opportunity, we are in as good a shape as we've been in in years with picks, with financial, with our cap. We're in as good a shape we've ever been if we see a way to improve our team with a player that makes sense today, this year, next year to entertain it and look at it."
Are league meetings a place for trade talks?
When the league's owners and executives get together in New York City, there's a lot of business to cover around the league in areas like player safety, broadcast rights, rules, etc.
One thing that isn't off the table at all however, is conversations about personnel and transactions, which Jones says isn't off the table in that setting.
"You discuss any and everything," Jones said. "The league, of course, league issues are there, but you can very easily, at any level, especially if you've got some owners involved in the meeting and this is an owner's meeting, and you'll have some executives that are part of it. It's not uncommon at all to talk about a player or what if, toss it out there. Not at all."
Conversations about a George Pickens extension
George Pickens has been everything that the Cowboys have wanted him to be, and then some, since trading a third-round pick for him in May. As CeeDee Lamb's running mate, he's fourth in the NFL in receiving yards (607) and tied for second in receiving touchdowns (6).
That begs the question: Will the Cowboys choose to extend him to keep him in Dallas long term, and if they do, would they look to get an extension done during the season?
"Any and everything about George Pickens is crossing our mind…" Jones said. "It certainly can generate conversations between people in our building without George being in the room. And it can cause a lot of conversation I'm sure around the league. The answer is certainly he's a topic of interest and discussion because of the success he's having."
DeMarvion Overshown's upcoming return
Jones has said numerous times during the opening weeks of the season that "help is on the way" in terms of their defense, which has struggled for the most part this year. One player that's looking to serve as that help is DeMarvion Overshown, who had his 21-day return to practice window opened yesterday, and has impressed Jones with how he's gone about his rehab process.
"We're all excited about him," Jones said. We know what he's about. Can I tell you this? He and we have learned even more how special he is during his rehab work and his time away from it. Boy, that's a gut check. That's a mentality. It's a read on you by your teammates, your coaches, fans. It's a read on yourself in your mirror to work through a rehab process. Michael Irvin said it made his career when he went through his big-time rehab process on his knee. So it's a big thing there and it really has us all excited to get him back."
