FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys trimmed their roster down to 53 players on Tuesday, just like every team around the NFL. When it was all said and done, the team released 13 players and waived 18.
By 11 AM CT today, teams must submit all waiver wire claims to the league, and players will be processed based on the order of the 2025 NFL Draft. That means the Cowboys will be 12th in the pecking order, and Brian Schottenheimer is anticipating some more action.
"I think we will definitely be active," Schottenheimer said. "What does that mean? I don't know, I don't know how many new faces will be here compared to how many guys you bring back, but we're open for business if you will say."
Whether it be through the wire, signing veterans that were released or even potentially another trade, the Cowboys are still going through the balancing act of getting everyone they want in some capacity while staying within roster and practice squad limits.
In Schottenheimer's words, the day serves as "a second draft," and allows the team the opportunity to revisit players that the team liked in the draft/evaluation process and see if they can fit into the team's equation.
"You're going to have all these players that get released into the free agency market and the waiver wire… where you can grab guys," Schottenheimer said. "I think the way I look at it is we can continue to be competitive and add pieces, and that means we're doing our job."
That means that Cowboys VP of player personnel Will McClay and has staff have been increasingly busy over the last 24 hours getting Schottenheimer and the coaching staff up to speed on players they feel like could be additions.
"Will McClay looks exhausted right now, but I don't feel bad for him at all," Schottenheimer said with a smile. "I said, 'Hey, I don't want to hear it. Get back in there and turn on some more film.' He and the staff are working incredibly hard."
The team views talent acquisition as a 24/7, 365 day a year process, and Wednesday serves as one of the more important days for that to come to fruition.
