Cowboys Finally Claim First Championship


The Cowboys were being touted as "Next Year's Champions" for coming up short, losing to Green Bay twice, including the "Ice Bowl" and then in Super Bowl V to the Colts. But finally, they got over the hump with the 1971 season, resulting in the Cowboys' first title with a 24-3 win over Miami in Super Bowl VI.

Roger Staubach was named MVP but the signature play occurred on defense as Bob Lilly chased Dolphins quarterback Bob Griese down for a sack and a 29-yard loss, putting a stamp on a defensive effort that lifted the Cowboys to their first title.
