FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys have added nearly 30 new players to the roster over the last two months, from a collection of free-agent signings, draft picks, undrafted free agents and even a few trades.
All in all, a third of the 90-man roster has been overhauled since mid-March, creating quite a few changes to each position.
Over the next few weeks, we'll take a closer look at where things stand at each position. The Cowboys won't release a depth chart until the first preseason game in August, so the following order of players is simply a projection, which of course, is always subject to change. Let's continue the series with the quarterback position:
- Dak Prescott
- Joe Milton III
- Will Grier
Battle to Watch: Be not confused, there's only one battle involved here, but it should be a doozy. For when Will Grier lines up at training camp, for the first time in his NFL career, he will have a fair shot at earning the role of QB2, now that the Cooper Rush era is officially over in Dallas. Contending alongside Grier will be Milton, acquired via trade ahead of the NFL Draft, and he brings his own skill set that keeps Grier pushing daily to try and not be overshadowed — again.
Time is Now: … for Grier? That is the question at hand, now isn't it? An emotional Grier showed what he can do when he was released following the trade that brought Trey Lance to Dallas, going out in a blaze of glory in his final preseason game at the time. He was re-signed last November, but spent the entirety of his second stretch on the practice squad. If he wants to edge out Milton, he'll need to channel that same intensity.
Trait-Mark: Milton has an absolute cannon of an arm. It's what made him such a weapon in his time at Tennessee after transferring from Michigan in 2021. His size and mobility are also intriguing for the Cowboys as a potential QB2 in Dallas, given he's not exactly easy to take down in the open field once he gets going. Unable to get much going with the Patriots as their sixth-round pick in 2024, Milton is getting an early fresh start in a Cowboys' outfit in desperate search of identifying their new backup QB.
Don't Forget About … completing 29 of 35 pass attempts for a total of 305 passing yards and two touchdowns to no interceptions, and rushing for another two touchdowns alongside 53 yards on the ground from 10 attempts. That's what Grier did in August 2023 against other NFL competition, albeit not first-stringers, letting it be known the version of himself that received a Heisman vote at West Virginia was ready to breakout; and he simply needs to channel that energy again in Oxnard this summer.
