OXNARD, Calif. – After a full week of being at training camp, the pads finally came on for the first time Sunday, giving the Cowboys their most physical practice so far.

However, it appeared to have come at a costly price, as veteran guard Rob Jones suffered a broken bone in his neck that could sideline him several months.

"It happened right at the first," Jones said of Sunday's practice, although he finished the entire practice, and even took some extra reps with rookie guard Tyler Booker.

"They're saying it'll be about 2-3 months," said Jones, who was wearing a neck brace.

Jones, who joined the Cowboys in March as a free-agent signing that gave the team immediate experience and depth on the O-line, suffered the injury towards the very end of Sunday afternoon's practice.

Jones, who has 30 career starts under his belt, including all 17 last year for the Dolphins, signed a 1-year deal worth up to $3.75 million.

But the deal was signed before the NFL Draft to give the Cowboys a viable option to start at right guard and replaced newly-retired Zack Martin. But that was before the Cowboys were able to draft Tyler Booker with the No. 12 pick in late-April.

Booker is slated to the be the starting right guard, although Jones had taken some first-team reps so far in the first week.

With Jones out for a while, the Cowboys still have some quality depth at guard with starting experience. Saahdiq Charles has 18 career starts, while Brock Hoffman has started nine total games at both guard and center and T.J. Bass has five starts.
