Mailbag: What Will Be The Top Position Battle?

Looks like a lot of depth on this roster. What's the top position battle you're looking forward to once the pads come on in training camp? - MATTHEW K / PLANO, TX

Bryan: I want to know who's playing SAM linebacker. Mickey thinks it's Sean Lee. I am not so sure of that. I know it's not a position that sees a bunch of snaps in this scheme, but if Lee plays there it's a change in the staff's idea of trying to protect him.

Rob: Mickey did the math: There will be 16 defensive linemen vying for spots in camp. The Cowboys typically keep about half that on the final roster. Randy Gregory's indefinite suspension could open up one spot for however long he's on that reserve list. But it's probably an uphill climb for the later picks and the undrafted players they intend to sign – some talented guys, by the way – to make the 53.

I have not seen where the Cowboys have brought in an undrafted free agent kicker yet. Do they have plans to bring someone in for some competition for Brett Maher at the kicker spot? - GLENN PARRY / SENATOBIA, MS

Bryan: You're right. They haven't brought anyone in to compete with Maher. Maybe during the OTAs and minicamps we'll see that change. I believe they brought in three or four to try out on Dallas Day, so one could come from that group.

Rob: Consistency with those 40-49 yard field goals was an issue for Maher at times last season. He also made some huge kicks, and there's no question about his leg strength. Looks like it's his job to lose, but you're right, typically the Cowboys bring in another kicker for depth throughout a long camp. Perhaps that happens at some point.
