Practice Update: New Guard Injured

FRISCO, Texas – Limited by back tightness Wednesday, starting cornerback Chidobe Awuzie worked with the athletic training staff during the open portion of Thursday's practice.

Head coach Jason Garrett said Awuzie was feeling better Thursday morning and was hopeful the second-year corner could do something in practice.

Garrett said newly-acquired guard Parker Ehinger hurt his knee Wednesday and couldn't finish practice. The team worked out free agent Xavier Su'a-Filo – a 41-game starter for the Texans over the last four years – as a possible option for depth.

With Pro Bowl center Travis Frederick (illness) currently sidelined and veteran guard Marcus Martin on injured reserve, the Cowboys traded cornerback Charvarius Ward to the Chiefs for Ehinger last week. His timetable to return is uncertain at this point.

Defensive tackle Datone Jones (knee) and safety Xavier Woods (hamstring) also were not practicing during the portion open to the media.

The Cowboys open the regular season Sunday at Carolina.
