Practice Update: Lawrence Returns; No Gregory

FRISCO, Texas – After sitting out with a groin injury Wednesday, Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence was back on the field for open portion of Thursday's practice.

The Cowboys were likely being cautious with their Pro Bowl pass rusher Wednesday and don't seem concerned about his availability for Sunday night's home opener against the New York Giants at AT&T Stadium.

Head coach Jason Garrett said quarterback Dak Prescott hurt his ankle near the end of the Cowboys' loss to Carolina but practiced fully Wednesday and was taking reps again Thursday.

Fellow defensive end Randy Gregory is expected to miss another practice due to a concussion suffered last Sunday against the Panthers. Starting safety Xavier Woods (hamstring) also was not on the field again during the open portion. Center Travis Frederick (Guillain-Barre Syndrome) continues to attend practice but doesn't have a timetable to return to on-field activities yet.

Defensive tackle Datone Jones, who missed the season opener with a knee sprain, took part in early drills Thursday. He appears to be getting closer to a return.
