Cowboys Mailbag: March 22, 2012

/ Editor's Note: Each weekday, DallasCowboys.com's writers will field two questions from the fans. Click here to email your question now. **

CARL DAVIS - STOCKTON, CA: What role do you see Felix Jones playing this year and beyond. Do you even see him remaining on the team?

Nick:I think next year is as far as it should go in terms of figuring out his future with the Cowboys. He only has one year left on his contract and this season will be very important for his future, not just with the Cowboys but any team. We'll see how he responds in a contract year. Assuming everyone is healthy, DeMarco Murray would be the starter and Jones would be a complementary back, possibly on third downs or just getting an occasional series. But we know the RBs get hurt and Jones needs to shine when given opportunities. It wouldn't surprise me if this is the last year for Jones in a Cowboys uniform.

Josh: I see him on the team this year, for sure, but if DeMarco Murray is healthy I don't envision Jones with much more than a complementary role. And at this point, I don't think the Cowboys should be trying to extend him after the 2012 season. Running backs don't age well, and he's already had his share of bumps and bruises along the way. If he loses a step, he won't be very valuable. Stay young at running back.

DAVID CLEAVER - LAGO VISTA, TX: Why have the Cowboys not re-signed Mat McBriar? In my opinion, he's been their most valuable player for several years.

Nick:Obviously the money has to be an issue. Coming off his injury, and with the position he plays, it's likely the Cowboys aren't offering a big contract. McBriar and his agent likely feel like his accomplishments and years of service are worth more. Maybe the Cowboys want to wait a little while to see how he responds from the foot surgery he had last month. Something tells me he will be back with the Cowboys this year, but the job probably won't be given to him. I would imagine he'll have to beat out Chris Jones for the job.

Josh: I think they've got an offer on the table, and McBriar might be holding out hope for more. They do seem pretty happy with Chris Jones, and I wouldn't rule out the Cowboys going after a pretty good punter after the draft. McBriar's injury definitely creates doubt that hasn't been there for a long time.
