FRISCO, Texas – With the Cowboys a week away from the beginning of mandatory minicamp, All-Pro defensive end Micah Parsons has been "in and out" of the team's voluntary OTAs over the course of the last few weeks as he seeks a contract extension in Dallas.
Cowboys co-owner and COO Stephen Jones was very blunt with reporters on the topic, and didn't provide an update on discussions between Parsons and the team.
"No different than anything else, I'll let you know when it happens." Jones said.
Following the media's viewing of practice, Parsons arrived at the facility and was in the locker room with his teammates after a flight cancellation caused him to not arrive on time. He did not speak with reporters, and Jones isn't concerned about his absence at times during OTAs.
"No, that's part of the business. All teams go through it and that's part of the business." Jones said.
Does that mean Parsons will be in the building next week for mandatory minicamp?
"You'd have to ask Micah." Jones said.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said earlier in the day that he expects Parsons to be in attendance and has been in contact with him and the two have had good dialogue.
"Micah and I talked a couple of days ago. He's doing a little bit of traveling, but again, everything that he and I talked about, I expect that he will be here..." Schottenheimer said. "Micah and I have had great communication, everything I've asked him to do and vice versa he's followed through on."
Another player the Cowboys are looking forward to getting back in the building is Trevon Diggs, who is nursing back from season-ending knee surgery. Diggs hasn't been in the facility for OTAs, but the Cowboys are still in the loop of his recovery process and expect him to be in attendance for mandatory minicamp next week..
"He's getting his work done, our guys are keeping up with it, very pleased with where he is. He's being diligent, we know who he's working with and feel good about it…" Jones said.
"Our preference is always to have them here, we're huge fans of what Britt [Brown] does with them and at the same time, that's his choice. It's not mandatory, our understanding is he's getting the work done and he'll be back in and we'll get a good look at him next week."
Diggs underwent surgery in January and it's his second major knee injury in as many years, so there's still no clear timetable as to when he could make his return to the field for the Cowboys.
"We don't know that for sure," Jones said when asked when Diggs could potentially return. "And won't have a feel for when he's going to be able to get in the middle of everything until we get to training camp probably, and with him day in and day out and see how he's progressing."
With Diggs sidelined for the near future and other cornerbacks like Josh Butler and third-round pick Shavon Revel Jr. also on the mend from major injuries, a lot is in the air for the Cowboys at the cornerback position. That said, Jones has been encouraged by some of the depth pieces that Dallas has during the course of OTAs.
"Between guys like Diggs and Revel in particular, guys that can make a huge difference for us, we'll know a lot more when we get to camp," Jones said. "But we do like what [Andrew] Booth was doing, really like what [Kaiir] Elam's doing, [Caelen] Carson's really starting to get his legs again, and of course [DaRon] Bland is, Bland. He's one of the best in the business, it's great to have him out there, we'll kind of see how things evolve."
Part of the fallout from those injuries has been Bland moving inside to play the slot cornerback slot, but he's said in the past that he'd prefer to play outside where he had a historic 2023 season.
Aside from that, the position will embody Brian Schottenheimer's new mantra for the team to a T to determine the rest of the starting group until Diggs and the others return healthy: Compete every day.
The Dallas Cowboys returned to work on May 28 for OTAs, laying the foundation for the 2025 season with focused drills, fresh energy, and early glimpses of new talent.
