Ellis: This Projected Cut To 53 Hardly Final

IRVING, Texas -I've already explained my belief that the Cowboys' 53-man roster, revealed Saturday, will be anything but final. There's a great chance several new faces will be in town on Sunday.

But in this business, you gotta take a shot. Here's my best guess at the 53 as of Saturday afternoon.

QB (3) -A year from now the Cowboys may only need to keep two at the position. McGee will be the backup.

Tony Romo
Jon Kitna
Stephen McGee

RB (5) -Jason Pociask can line up at fullback or tight end, so he sticks around until Martellus Bennett is healthy.

Felix Jones
Tashard Choice
DeMarco Murray
Phillip Tanner
Jason Pociask

WR (5) -Raymond Radway would've forced the Cowboys to go long at the position. Awful break.

Miles Austin
Dez Bryant
Kevin Ogletree
Jesse Holley
Dwayne Harris

TE (3) -Marty B's injury may take longer to heal than many have projected. High ankle sprains often last six weeks.

Jason Witten
Martellus Bennett
John Phillips

OL (10) -Jermey Parnell is the swing tackle unless the Cowboys can find someone with a little more experience on waivers.

Doug Free
Bill Nagy
Phil Costa
Kyle Kosier
Tyron Smith
Jermey Parnell
David Arkin
Kevin Kowalski
Montrae Holland
Sam Young

DL (6) -If he's not a starter, Igor Olshansky's contract is prohibitive.

Marcus Spears
Jay Ratliff
Kenyon Coleman
Sean Lissemore
Josh Brent
Jason Hatcher

LB (8) -Bruce Carter is on the Non-Football Injury list, so the Cowboys wouldn't have to add him to the active roster until Week 6.

Anthony Spencer
Sean Lee
Bradie James
DeMarcus Ware
Victor Butler
Keith Brooking
Alex Albright
Kenwin Cummings

CB (6) -Because he missed some 18 offseason practices, I give fifth-round pick Josh Thomas the benefit of the doubt. The Cowboys have to hope their initial scouting of him was correct.

Terence Newman
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Alan Ball
Bryan McCann
Josh Thomas

S (4) -Barry Church could be ready to start by next season. The Cowboys had that in mind when only giving Abe Elam and Gerald Sensabaugh one-year deals.

Abe Elam
Gerald Sensabaugh
Barry Church
Danny McCray

ST (3) -If David Buehler hasn't stabilized by the bye, Week 5, the Cowboys will be looking for alternatives again.

David Buehler
Mat McBriar
L.P. Ladouceur
