Mailbag: Thoughts On One-Year Contracts?; Cowboys Going All-In?

CALEAB LOSEEVICTORVILLE, CA
With some of the offseason moves, analysts have begun to speculate the Cowboys' window for contention is right now. What does that say for the Cowboys two or three years from now, especially with all the dead money from Romo's restructuring?

Bryan: Why are you worrying two or three years from now? If this front office does its job with the draft, selected free agents and players added through other means – then you shouldn't have any worries. The cap is going up every year, so Romo's contract should be taken care of in the future. Putting my head in the sand is the last thing I am doing now.

David: Unlike Bryan, apparently, I worry about the state of the salary cap all the time. The Romo restructure undoubtedly makes this team's cap situation a bit more perilous, in my opinion. Essentially, they need him to be healthy for the next three years if they're going to avoid getting killed by this contract. But I don't think that means they need to go "all-in," so to speak. They have a two-to-four year window to succeed before Romo retires, but I don't think that means they need to be reckless.

How do you guys feel about a lot of the one-year contracts the Cowboys went with this year? Is it the way to go or are we going to be in the same boat next year with lots of needs to fill?

Bryan: I actually like it because it gives the club flexibility. I believe that you are going to see core players locked up longer and the role players on one to two year deals. The roster is going to change every year and the Jones' are comfortable with that so that is what we are going to see going forward.

David: It's a troubling stat on paper, but not necessarily in reality. The Cowboys have upward of 20 current players who are set to enter free agency in 2016 – but most of those are role players. Dez Bryant, Rolando McClain, Tyrone Crawford, Ron Leary are the big-name free agents for this year. The rest of them are guys that can be re-signed or replaced without stressing too much about it.
