Mailbag: Updating The Free-Lawrence Battle? Jenkins' Progress?

BRANDON WILCOXEVERLY, IA

have read a few articles lately that describe a defender getting by Doug Free. Has he struggled so far since his return, or is this a sign of the defense improving?*

Nick: I think it's a fair question. Probably a little bit of both, but Free did miss most of the summer with this foot injury. He's a little rusty but for the most part, he's coming along. This is a veteran player who knows how to get his body ready for the season. I don't think it's anything to worry about.

David:DeMarcus Lawrence has definitely gotten the better of Free a few times – there's no denying that. Until I see otherwise, though, I think it's more about Lawrence's development than any deficiencies in Free's game. Free will need some time to acclimate to the speed of practice, but I think he's earned the benefit of the doubt with his play over the last two years.

Haven't heard much on A.J. Jenkins. How has he looked in camp, and can you see him earning a roster spot?*

Nick: There's a reason you haven't heard much about him. He just hasn't done anything. As for the last part of this question … no.

David:To be completely honest with you, there are only perhaps two younger receivers who have stood out with their play at this camp, and that'd be Lucky Whitehead and Deontay Greenberry. Jenkins isn't the only receiver who needs to step up, but he does need to.
