IRVING, Texas â This year's draft lacks the same star power at quarterback as last year, but here are a few quarterbacks that could go in the early or middle rounds of this year's draft:
- *Matt Barkley      USC                    *
Gets his shoulders around when he throws on the bootâŠaccurate on the moveâŠball out quick on short side screenâŠcan get rid the ball on the HOTâŠcan throw to a spotâŠwas a little careless with the ball against Syracuse and UCLAâŠtries to slide forward in the pocket when throwing the ballâŠnice slant for a touchdown when feet were not setâŠcan bring the receiver down the stemâŠcan change his arm angle to make throwsâŠwill check the ball downâŠnice touch to Woods on the "9" along the sidelineâŠthrew it right in the windowâŠknows where the blitzer is coming fromâŠdoesn't make the WR work for the ballâŠwill set the protectionâŠputs the deep ball in a good spotâŠmakes quick decisionsâŠtook big hit in UCLA game which resulted in a fumbleâŠcan lead a receiver across the fieldâŠgets the ball to the right guyâŠcan float the ball to the flatâŠalways has defenders around him in the pocketâŠtouch to the sidelineâŠgets rid of the ball when not openâŠmade a great read on single high safety for a touchdown against OregonâŠkeeps his eyes down the fieldâŠwas hurried in the UCLA game and not as accurateâŠ
- *Geno Smith        West Virginia     *
Operates mainly out of the shot gunâŠtends to stare at his receiverâŠwill take a hit in the pocket but will deliver the ballâŠoutstanding mobilityâŠbounces on his feet in the pocketâŠplays on his toesâŠstrong armâŠcan throw it on the lineâŠcan throw in a tight windowâŠtries to fit it in down the field between defendersâŠwill throw the ball away if in troubleâŠcan make throws off balanceâŠhad ball knocked out of his hand in the pocket against TexasâŠneeds to be more accurate on the slantâŠmight be making up his mind pre snap of where to throw the ballâŠshowed some touch on the swing against TCUâŠtimes where he holds the ballâŠcan buy a second chance with his feetâŠwill get careless with mechanicsâŠ.will make some poor choices with the ball throwing down the middleâŠcan hit his man on the moveâŠmade some tough throws on 4th down against Texas and TCUâŠstrength to avoid the rushâŠcan make those backside throwsâŠmade throw from left hash all the way to the right against OklahomaâŠcan drive the ball when he has tooâŠled receiver down the sideline against Oklahoma for a touchdownâŠI believe there a plenty to work with hereâŠ.his mobility gives him a chanceâŠsmart, hard-working kid that has toolsâŠ.
- *Tyler Wilson       Arkansas            *
Can fit the ball insideâŠwill stand in the pocket to deliver the passâŠat times will look at the receiver late, then try and get him the ballâŠhad some bad interceptionsâŠI didn't see much zip on the ballâŠcan throw it on the move going to his leftâŠcan put the ball in spotsâŠreally has to wind up to get the ball down the fieldâŠis not a very mobile quarterbackâŠlikes to throw ball underneath but might be because the struggles of the offensive lineâŠmade a nice throw on the "4" or the In against South CarolinaâŠwas able to hit his man on the moveâŠcannot run away from troubleâŠmade a bad decision on the read option, took a tackle for a lossâŠthrows the ball with a three quarter motionâŠwill hang in the pocketâŠtook a huge hit from Clowney and delivered a touchdown strikeâŠ.throws a ton of passes off his back footâŠdon't blame him for not setting his feetâŠplays with some awareness in the pocketâŠ.thought he was a much better player as a Junior than Senior but all that he went through most likely had an effect on himâŠwas not impressive in his live work at Senior BowlâŠwasn't accurate at all with his passesâŠ.probably a better player overall than the one I am describing but has been a struggle for himâŠ.
- *Mike Glennon    North Carolina St            *
Smooth throwing motionâŠcan throw the ball on the lineâŠcan lead the receiver up the fieldâŠnice touch laying the ball to the outside for the receiver to run underâŠcan throw the "9" with touch and accuracyâŠshowed some touch on the swing pass in the flatâŠhad a fumble on a sack in the pocket against MiamiâŠ.can fit the ball between defendersâŠwill check down if he doesn't have anything down fieldâŠshowed the ability to slide in the pocket and avoid but would not call him a threat to run with the ballâŠkeeps his eyes down the field when his receiver broke freeâŠshowed the ability to get the ball offâŠlittle high versus Florida State on the curlâŠcan high the crossing routeâŠtype of quarterback that lets routes develop than makes the throwâŠfound a busted coverage against North Carolina that resulted in a touchdownâŠwill stand very tall in the pocket but not a statueâŠhis best trait in my view is his touchâŠobserved a 55 and 60 yard pass in games I studiedâŠbelieve the arm can make the necessary throwsâŠ
- *EJ Manuel           Florida State      *
Throws like he is pushing the ballâŠshows some touch on the move but not always accurateâŠis an athlete with the ball in his handsâŠmoves out of the pocket to make throwsâŠcan snap it off quicklyâŠmade a nice throw down the middle of the field off the zone read, managed to get it over the top of the linebackerâŠshows arm strengthâŠmade an off balance throw on a "9" for a touchdownâŠwill struggle with accuracyâŠhad man wide open in the corner against Miami but [embedded_ad]
overthrew himâŠhad a fumble in the same game when he was aware in the pocket of the rushâŠis not consistent with his throwing motionâŠcarelessâŠthrew the ball up for grabs in the Florida when he was under pressureâŠdoesn't appear like he reads coverage wellâŠanother interception with a crossing route where he didn't see the linebackerâŠHe tends to hold the ball too long in the pocket and seemed rattled by pressureâŠwas much better in the Senior Bowl when it came to throwing the ball after he looked awful during the practicesâŠwould not draft him if you just studied the Florida gameâŠmight have more athletic ability than Geno Smith in this draft but his throwing motion is going to have to be completely redoneâŠ.
