FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys are finalizing a trade with the Packers to acquire former Pro Bowl defensive end Rashan Gary in exchange for a 2027 fourth-round pick.
Gary, 28, has spent all seven years of his NFL career in Green Bay, where he earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2024 and has tallied 46.5 career sacks. Now, Gary reunites with his former Packers teammate in Kenny Clark and gives Dallas help in their pass rush department.
In 2025, Gary started in 15 games and generated 7.5 sacks, 20 QB hits, seven tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones said at the NFL Combine that Dallas was looking for immediate contributors on defense, and that he'd be willing to spend future capital on it as well.
"The only way to push more is for me to go borrow some of my future. Expect me to go borrow some of my future…" Jones said. "I want to do everything we possibly can to stop somebody and to basically win some third downs more than we did last year. So I think that would be the area that you would see me bust the budget."
There are several connections between Gary and Dallas' defensive staff. New Cowboys defensive coordinator Christian Parker was in Green Bay when the Packers drafted Gary in 2019 while serving as a defensive quality control coach. It wasn't only Gary's first two seasons in the league that they spent together, but also Parker's first two seasons working in the NFL as well. Cowboys defensive pass game coordinator/defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley was also with Gary in Green Bay while he served as the Packers' passing game coordinator in 2024 and 2025. Additionally, Gary has spent time training with new Cowboys pass rush consultant Brandon Jordan and will get to do so again.
It's the second trade in the last year that the Cowboys have made with the Packers involving a pass rusher. Before the 2025 season began, Dallas traded Micah Parsons to Green Bay in exchange for two first-round picks and Kenny Clark. Now, the Cowboys are the ones acquiring a pass rusher in Gary.
While the trade terms have been agreed to on Monday, the move won't officially be processed until the new league year begins on Wednesday, March 11 at 3:00 CT.
