MOBILE, Ala. – Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and owner/general manager Jerry Jones offered their continued support of Josh Brent as the former Cowboy goes through his intoxication manslaughter trial.
No verdict was decided on Tuesday, and the jurors were reportedly sequestered after deliberations finished for the day. They'll pick up again tomorrow morning to decide the fate of Brent, who's been accused of driving drunk and crashing his car, resulting in the death of his teammate and friend, Jerry Brown
Cowboys staff members and players have stood by Brent after the incident occurred during the season in December 2012. Brent, who played in 12 games in 2012, has since retired and missed the 2013 season. [embedded_ad]
"Our support for Josh has been unwavering since the start of this thing," Garrett said. "That just simply continues. Obviously, a very tragic situation for Jerry Brown and his family and for Josh Brent. This is the process that you go through and we're supportive of him and we're just hopeful that the outcome is something that's certainly justified and allows him to continue on with his life. It's a very tragic situation, and that hasn't changed."
Garrett said he's followed the trial from a distance, while Jones said he's been following the trial very closely.
"I get updates daily to the progress of how it's going daily and am certainly interested in the verdict," Jones said. "Certainly it's tragic. We've all, to some degree, have been a part of this. We support Josh. This has been just a terrible experience for the families who lost a loved one and for Josh who loved Jerry as well."
Sean Lee was reportedly present at the courthouse Tuesday to offer support for Brent. Other Cowboys players have been called to testify. The trial began Monday and on Thursday safeties Barry Church and Danny McCray both took the stand.
