Mailbag: Hitchens' Opportunity At MLB? Position With Thinnest Depth?

REUBEN JOHNSONNASHVILLE, TN
I'm a big fan of Anthony Hitchens at MLB. I know we just signed Justin Durant recently who can play all three linebacker spots, but isn't Hitchens the front runner to be the starter and isn't he a better player overall?

Bryan: Anthony Hitchens is going to get the first opportunity at this job. Been pretty steady the first two practices working with Sean Lee. Where Hitchens needs to show that he can handle the job is when we get in these padded practices. He can't be getting knocked around inside and he can hold the point of attack. Durant was brought here as protection in case there are problems with what I just said.

David:The ideal scenario is for Hitchens to grab this job and not let go, but it's hard to deny that he's had problems with injuries in the past. I honestly don't think Durant was brought here to be a starter at any one position – the Cowboys just want him to provide depth at multiple spots. I think Durant is preferably the first man up at both Mike and Will linebacker, but he might be called upon if something befalls Hitchens or Lee.

Aside from Mr. Tony Romo, which player (or position) can we least afford to lose to an injury during training camp or preseason games?

Bryan: Offensive Tackle. They haven't figured out who that back up would be right now. There could be a way to kick Zack Martin or La'el Collins outside, but I just don't think they want to go that route at this time.

David:Defensive end, simply because they're already short-handed as it is. If something happens to DeMarcus Lawrence, Benson Mayowa or Ryan Russell, then you're truly going to be scraping the bottom of the barrel to find guys who can rush the passer.
