Mailbag: Is Safety A Thin Position?; Who's The Backup Guard On The O-Line?

MIKE CONNELLDEERFIELD BEACH, FL
I know we signed Danny McCray and everyone is worried about running back and cornerback, but safety is thin no? If Church or Wilcox get hurt, who plays? McCray and Heath? Or does Byron Jones move there? Just a scary thought.

Bryan: The coaches have far more confidence in Heath than you do – he did make a very nice play in the Green Bay game in coverage that got them off the field. Byron Jones would be an option as well and I would plan on him getting some snaps at the position regardless. Jerome Henderson said he would play his best five and if Jones is one of those guys then he will play.

Rob: Nope, safety doesn't appear to be one of the deeper positions on the roster. But Heath has experience in the scheme, and Jones is insurance at free safety if Wilcox or Church got hurt, with Wilcox potentially able to slide to strong safety. McCray made 10 starts in 2012 when Church tore his Achilles, but his primary role figures to be core special-teamer.

With the pickup of La'el Collins and Chaz Green, do you see Mackenzy Bernadeau here this year? Or do you see Ron Leary becoming the backup to the guard positions?

Bryan: You shouldn't act like that Ronald Leary is just going to give this job up to La'el Collins and go away in the night. If Collins doesn't win the spot I could see him as that backup swing tackle and guard with Bernadeau backing up at center and both guard spots. Also keep an eye on Zack Martin getting some work at center and Travis Frederick working at guard. It's all about the flexibility with this group.

Rob: Bernadeau's value is his ability to back up Travis Frederick at center. Zack Martin can presumably play all five positions, but if Frederick got hurt, the Cowboys would be fixing two positions by moving Martin to center and then sliding in someone else at right guard. If Collins wins the job at left guard, then they've got Leary behind him with Green potentially able to back up tackle or guard. Collins can do the same if he's not a starter this year.
