Mailbag: Level Of Confidence In Jaylon Smith's Health? Late-Round RBs?

CAMERON COMPTONSTAFFORD, VA
After I read about Jaylon Smith and his pro day (him benching 24 reps in the bench press) and him saying he's squatting 400 pounds now, I was wondering what does that mean for his draft stock? Is possible we take him second or third round?

Bryan: It's great to see that he is making gains in the weight room and the rehab is going well. There is still the problem of the nerve in his knee and until that fires again, there is no talk of him playing football. I have also been told that he is likely to miss the entire 2016 season regardless.

David:I'm encouraged by what I've heard, but I'm not sure it's enough to invest a top-100 pick in him. There's simply too much risk involved when you consider that your first three picks are supposed to be able to contribute right away. Now, would I take a chance on him in the sixth round? Absolutely.

Will the Cowboys wait until later in the draft, maybe rounds 4-7, to draft a running back with the addition of A. Morris and the need for defensive help?

Bryan: I do believe they select a running back at some point in this draft. They have been linked to players such as Ezekiel Elliott and Derrick Henry early but could also look at guys like C.J. Prosise and Kenyan Drake later. There are plenty of options to choose from regardless of the round.

David:I've gone on the record as saying I think they'll use a pick on a running back, but I agree with you that I don't think it'll come until the third or fourth round. I'd love for this team to draft Ezekiel Elliott, but I just don't think it's in the cards with the other questions they have to answer.
