Mailbag: Sorting Out The Dime Defense? Collins & Paea's Impact At DT?

DOOLEY MAKKCORAL SPRINGS, FL
It's 1st-and-Goal for the Giants inside the 10. Single back formation, with Odell and Marshall on the outside, Shepard and Engram in the slots. How do the Cowboys defend this? Who's got who in the secondary?

Bryan: Let's say that Beckham lines up on the Giants right side. Carroll takes him. Brown carries Marshall. Scandrick has Shepard. Jones or Heath takes Engram.

David:I'm really hoping that Chidobe Awuzie has gotten up to speed enough that he can contribute to this puzzle. I'd love to see him help out with tight end coverage the way that Byron Jones did when he was a rookie. Either way, I think your top three corners are set in stone for the time being – Nolan Carroll, Anthony Brown and Orlando Scandrick. Either Chido or Bene Benwikere is the next guy off the bench.

Could the combination of Maliek Collins and Stephen Paea on the line be a true difference maker in this game? I think Eli's lack of mobility and his poor tackle play causing him to move just a little could result in a lot more pressure for the unit as a whole.

Bryan: That's your hope, that you can squeeze the pocket from the edge and get pressure from the middle. Your problem here is that the strength of their offensive line is at center and left guard. I would match Collins over the top of John Jerry to see if I could do some good there.

David:I think the Cowboys' best bet to generate consistent pressure is going to come from the middle this season. Collins is this team's best pass rusher, and Paea certainly looked impressive at training camp. I think it'll be even more important for those two to win in this game, because Eli Manning doesn't hold the ball very long. They can do a lot of good if they can collapse the pocket quickly.
