Mailbag: Upgrading The Talent At Safety? Interest In Victor Cruz?

CHASE PENEKUHILO, HI
Could you see the front office letting Barry Church & J.J. Wilcox go and drafting Obi Melifonwu to help out Byron Jones cover the back end? Or re-signing one of them & still adding Obi to add younger talent to the secondary?

Bryan: I am getting the vibe that both will likely be gone. There is some serious talent at safety in this draft -- so that's a really good option.

David:I don't love the idea of asking a rookie to handle a starting safety spot – especially if you hold a late pick, like the Cowboys do. If they opt not to bring back Church and Wilcox, I'd hope they'll at least sign some veteran help to cover themselves. But I would certainly be on board to draft a safety, if that's the way the board falls.

With the recent release of Victor Cruz from the Giants, would the Cowboys consider signing him in free agency? Both Brice Butler and Terrance Williams are in the market this year, so could Cruz be a possible signing?

Bryan: Cruz is best in the slot. You already have one of those on your squad in Beasley. Like the safety position I mentioned earlier -- the draft has some talented players there, plus you have Andy Jones off the practice squad.

David:I just said I don't want a rookie starting at safety, but I have no problem drafting a receiver to come in and replace that production. Terrance Williams started from Day 1 as a third-round pick. Rather than overpay a veteran, I'd just as soon go draft a young, talented, inexpensive receiver.
