ARLINGTON, Texas – Ezekiel Elliott was glad Terrance Williams' career-high nine catches got noticed in Sunday's 28-17 win over the Chiefs.
There's plenty Williams does for Elliott on game days that goes unseen – and often unappreciated – to the casual observer.
"He's a guy that's selfless," Elliott said, "and a big part of his role is blocking on run plays, come in and blocking those safeties that come down in the box.
"It's just great to see him go out there and get some big opportunities in the pass game and make those big plays when we need them down the stretch."
Williams, a starter opposite Dez Bryant, led the Cowboys (5-3) in catches for the first time this season. His 141 yards were the third-highest single-game total of his career and his best since the 2015 season finale against the Redskins.
Sunday, he topped 100 yards by halftime with five catches on five targets, including a 27-yarder that set up quarterback Dak Prescott's first touchdown of the game – a 6-yard pass to Cole Beasley – one play later for a 7-0 lead.
Late in the second quarter, with Prescott scrambling to his right, Williams found open space for a 56-yard catch and run down to the Chiefs' 10-yard line. Prescott would then run for the offense's second touchdown and a 14-3 lead.
"During the week, coaches were giving us good messages on just being ready," Williams said. "And you never know when your name's going to be called."
Said head coach Jason Garrett: "Not only did he catch the ball, but he did a really good job after the catch. He went north and south on a few occasions, got first downs for us. When you attack defenses in a lot of different ways, run and pass, handing it to different guys, throwing it to different guys, it challenges them."[embeddedad0]
Williams was seen limping late in the game, and said afterward he aggravated a sore ankle that first cropped up in the season opener. He hasn't missed any practice or game time, however.
"It's just something that I just keep dealing with," he said.
The Cowboys are fortunate, because they've needed his catches and his blocking to keep the offense humming.
