Mailbag: Byron Jones An Option At Corner Again? Jonathan Cooper's Future?

DAN VINCENTCHICO, CA

With Byron Jones losing reps at safety, why not move him back to corner? Playing Jones and Chidobe Awuzie as outside corners with Jourdan Lewis in the slot seems like a good combination.

Bryan: The thought of playing Byron Jones at corner is likely from the new addition of Kris Richard as the secondary coach. He's had time now since coming on board to evaluate the tape and get a read on Jones. Maybe he had an idea where Jones fit when coming out of college? All possibilities. The question now is will this mean that other moves will happen? Awuzie or draft for a safety? The group will likely look different in 2018.

Rob:With secondary coach Kris Richard coming in with a new perspective on things, I wouldn't discount the possibility. We all know he previously had success in Seattle with big, physical corners like Richard Sherman. For me, the idea depends on a couple things. Is Kavon Frazier ready to take on more snaps at safety? He earned a larger role late in the season. And what's Orlando Scandrick's future with the team? He's under contract but sounded uncertain late in the season on whether he'd be back in Dallas. If you move Jones back, you've still got to find a rotation with Awuzie, Lewis, Anthony Brown and Xavier Woods.

I have been reading lots of questions about the left guard position and the answer is always draft/free agency. Did Jonathan Cooper play enough to attract interest from other teams so the Cowboys wouldn't want to overpay him?

Bryan: Jonathan Cooper wasn't terrible the second half of the season. If you remember the final game, he suffered a significant injury to his knee, so now he's in rehab mode, plus he'll be a free agent. Could he come back for another season? Yes, that's a possibility, but looking at this draft I just feel like there is better long-term solution working through the draft.

Rob: It's hard to predict the market. We tried that regarding Terrance Williams last year and the Cowboys ended up signing him to a pretty cap-friendly deal. I wouldn't rule out that possibility with Cooper. I thought he played better as he got more games under his belt playing next to Travis Frederick and (mostly) Tyron Smith. If Cooper returns, it wouldn't keep me from drafting and developing a guard the way they did with Ronald Leary a few years back.
