Zero to 100: The numbers behind Cowboys' 40-40 tie in Week 4

FRISCO, Texas – The two most unique numbers from Sunday night are 40 and 40 again, the first time in NFL history that a final score has been 40-40.

It was the Cowboys and Packers collectively achieving that goal, and Dallas moving to 1-2-1 in a thrilling overtime game ahead of a two-game road trip to New York and Carolina.

A tie doesn't necessarily help the Cowboys, but it also doesn't hurt them as a 1-3 start to the season is much worse. With that in mind, could the result of this game come back to haunt or help Dallas at the end of the year if they make a playoff push?

Let's take a deeper dive into more of the numbers behind the tie:

3

In the last decade, 18 teams have finished a regular season game with a tie. Of those 18 teams, only three of them reached the postseason and advanced no further than the divisional round.

18

Dallas' defense missed 18 tackles on Sunday night as their struggles to bring ball carriers to the ground continued. Green Bay had 239 yards of offense after contact alone, with RB Josh Jacobs responsible for 111 of those yards.

29.2

KaVontae Turpin averaged 29.2 yards per kickoff return against Green Bay, finishing his night with 175 total kickoff yards on six returns. There was none bigger than the 45-yard return to set the Cowboys offense up at their own 46 yard line with 1:45 left to play in the fourth quarter and Dallas in need of a touchdown.

34

Jake Ferguson set an NFL record among tight ends for most catches to start a season. His 34 receptions so far is the most through four games in league history for tight ends. It's also the second-most by any Cowboys player after four games, trailing Amari Cooper's 37 receptions in 2020.

56

It's been 56 seasons since the Cowboys finished a game with a tie. The last was in 1969 when they tied the 49ers 24-24 on Nov. 27.

70

The Cowboys have now played 70 games in franchise history when they scored at least 40 points. It's just the second time amongst those games in which they didn't get the win. The Cowboys are 68-1-1 with Sunday's tie. The only other game without a win was a 51-48 loss to Denver in 2013.

71.4

The Cowboys just couldn't get off the field when they needed to the most. The Packers were able to convert 10 of 14 third-down attempts for a 71.4 percentage. Meanwhile, the Cowboys were at 36.4 percent on 4-of-11 attempts.

72.9

Through four games, Dak Prescott has completed 72.9% of his passes for a league-leading 1,119 yards. He also leads the league in both completions (121) and passing attempts (166). Led by Prescott, the Cowboys currently have the number one offense in the NFL in terms of yards per game with 404.3.

87

Once again, the Cowboys were predominantly in zone coverage against the Packers' offense on drop backs, with 40 of their 46 (87%) plays in zone against the pass. Dallas gave up 302 yards of offense and a touchdown, pressuring Jordan Love 12 times and sacking him once on James Houston's strip sack.

95

The Cowboys were called for 11 penalties against the Packers resulting in 95 total penalty yards. That does not include several penalties that were offset by Green Bay penalties or those that were declined. Five of Dallas' 11 penalties gave the Packers a free first down on offense.
