FRISCO, Texas – The San Francisco 49ers are expected to hire former Cowboys defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to be their assistant head coach of defense, according to multiple reports including from NFL Media.

The 2025 season was Eberflus' one and only season as Dallas' defensive coordinator. Eberflus' first stint in Dallas came from 2011-2017 where he served as the linebackers coach and added passing game coordinator to his title in 2016.

Now, Eberflus joins Dallas' NFC rivals in San Francisco, who will pay a visit to AT&T Stadium during the 2026 season.

The Cowboys parted ways with Eberflus on January 6 after Dallas' defense finished last in the NFL in points allowed per game with 30.1.

Despite Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones looking for continuity at the position after having three different defensive coordinators in the three years prior, Jones felt the move was necessary.

"Having known Matt Eberflus for decades now, we have tremendous respect and appreciation for him as a coach and a person," Jones said in a statement after the team released Eberflus. "After reviewing and discussing the results of our defensive performance this season, though, it was clear that change is needed. This is the first step in that process and we will continue that review as it applies to reaching our much higher expectations."

In 2026, the Cowboys will turn to 34-year-old first-time coordinator Christian Parker to call the shots on defense. So far, communication is what has stood out early to Jones about his new coordinator.

"He's a natural teacher," Jones said of Parker. "He inspires you to listen to him, especially if you're a young player looking for him to give you something to make you a better player. All of those things really impressed everyone, and I'm real impressed with how he's working to get in and put the staff together as well."
