How exactly does one special teams coach differ from another? It seems like from watching the games that there isn't much difference from one unit to the next. What might Nick Sorensen do differently than John Fassel? – Dan Absher/Sacramento, CA
Mickey: Well, maybe not much since the Cowboys special teams performed at a high level under Fassel, the veteran special teams coordinator. Sorensen, though, gained a lot of experience during his 10-year career playing a whole lot of special teams, named the Jacksonville special teams captain during his four seasons there, was a special teams assistant coach for a season in Seattle and the special teams coordinator with Jacksonville for one season. Good thing is Sorensen inherits a mighty solid kicking game, with Pro Bowl kicker Brandon Aubrey, also an accomplished kickoff artist, along with veteran punter Bryan Anger. Plus, the Cowboys kept their kicking operation together, with Anger the holder and much sought after deep snapper Trent Sieg. And let's not forget the Pro Bowl returner KaVontae Turpin, along with adding speedy running back Jaydon Blue. The Cowboys also retained their special teams leader C.J. Goodwin, second last year with 12 tackles, last year's special teams tackle leader Hunter Luepke (13) and T-3rd Juanyeh Thomas and Buddy Johnson, each with eight. Not a bad situation.
Tommy: There likely won't be much noticeable difference from coordinator to coordinator, largely in part because Sorensen inherited a really good group with two All-Pros in Brandon Aubrey and KaVontae Turpin, and a core trio of Aubrey, Bryan Anger and Trent Sieg that have spent a lot of time working together. When they're playing as well as they are, you don't want to mess with that chemistry or change too much. The differences will likely come in how Sorensen handles punt/punt return blocking and setup, kickoff philosophy, etc. that may differ from what Bones was trying to do.
