Dallas Cowboys Updates

Updates: Cropper signed, Sanders to IR, more

Oct. 11

1:25 p.m. -- On Saturday, the Cowboys officially placed RB Miles Sanders on injured reserve, where he'll be out for the remainder of the 2025 season. In his place, the Cowboys signed WR Jalen Cropper to the active roster with the open spot.

Dallas also elevated veteran WR Parris Campbell from the practice squad, giving the Cowboys some depth at wide receiver with both CeeDee Lamb and KaVontae Turpin out.

Also out will be WR Jonathan Mingo and CB Caelen Carson, who are still within the 21-day window after being activated off of injured reserve. They came into the game as questionable, and Dallas has decided to keep them on the reserve/DFR list for their Week 6 game.

-------------

Oct. 10

3:00 p.m. -- Seven Cowboys players are questionable for Dallas' Week 6 game on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. On the official injury report is CB DaRon Bland (shoulder), CB Caelen Carson (knee), OT Ajani Cornelius (knee), CB Trevon Diggs (knee), DE Marshawn Kneeland (ankle), WR Jonathan Mingo (knee) and OG Tyler Smith (knee).

Five players are ruled out, including OG Tyler Booker (ankle), WR CeeDee Lamb (ankle), WR KaVontae Turpin (foot), LB Jack Sanborn (concussion) and RB Miles Sanders (knee/ankle), who Cowboys COO/co-owner Stephen Jones announced would be placed on season-ending injured reserve on Friday during an interview with 105.3 The Fan.

It's certainly a long list for Dallas, but one of the good pieces of news is that OT Tyler Guyton (concussion) carries no injury designation and is set to start at left tackle for the Cowboys. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer said earlier on Friday that Guyton and Tyler Smith were both trending positively towards playing on Sunday.

On Carolina's side, they'll be without RB Chuba Hubbard (calf), CB Akayleb Evans (hamstring), OT Taylor Moton (elbow) and DT Turk Wharton (toe). With Hubbard out, former Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle is slated to get a majority of the carries this week for the Panthers as he faces off against his former team.

-------------

10:45 a.m. -- After being cleared from concussion protocol yesterday, Cowboys LT Tyler Guyton is expected to re-enter the starting lineup on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers, per owner and general manager Jerry Jones.

"It's likely that he'll be in there absent some setback here these next couple of days." Jones said on 105.3 The Fan.

Jones did add that it's also likely a lot of the same depth players that started for the Cowboys last week will still play against Carolina Sunday because they don't have everybody back just yet, and they'll need to dress out some extra players, including potentially an extra offensive linemen.

-------------

Oct. 9

3:30 p.m. -- Dante Fowler is coming off of his best game of the season thus far in his return to the Cowboys, but he's now dealing with illness that sidelined him and kept him out of Thursday's practice.

The veteran pass rusher still has time to recover and potentially make the trip to face the Carolina Panthers, but his status is currently to-be-determined, as is that of Miles Sanders, who was downgraded to DNP in his second practice of the week — having been inactive against the Jets due to a knee and ankle injury.

Donovan Wilson, however, returned to practice after being absent on Wednesday with an elbow and knee issue, in a limited capacity, and starting left tackle Tyler Guyton officially cleared concussion protocol and, as such, was a full participant with medical clearance to travel and take the field.

The good news continues in that Marshawn Kneeland practiced for a second day in a row, albeit limited, after missing last week's victory over the Jets with an ankle injury.

Oct. 8

3:30 p.m. -- It could be at least one more week before KaVontae Turpin is back on the field for the Cowboys.

The All-Pro returner and dynamic wide receiver missed the Week 5 contest against the Jets with a foot injury, and he's not yet up to full speed as of Wednesday, labeling himself as "day to day" and stating the likelihood is he'll miss this weekend's matchup with an eye on returning against the Commanders in Week 6.

Donovan Wilson appeared on this week's injury report with an elbow and knee issue that caused him to miss practice, sidelined along with CeeDee Lamb, Tyler Booker and Jack Sanborn, the latter suffering a concussion against the Jets.

Returning to practice was Tyler Guyton, however, as he works to clear concussion protocol — limited on Wednesday in his first on-field action since entering the protocol during the eventual tie with the Packers in Week 4.

Oct. 7

10:30 a.m. -- A somewhat familiar face is on its way back to Dallas to join the Cowboys at a position of need.

Julius Wood has been signed to the team's practice squad as they begin preparation to face the Carolina Panthers, an area of the country Wood is extremely familiar with from his collegiate playing days.

An East Carolina product signed initially as an undrafted free agent by the Cowboys in 2024 following that year's NFL Draft, Wood re-enters the team's roster after veteran safety Malik Hooker was moved to injured reserve a few days prior, opening up a need for depth and insurance at the position.

An ex-teammate of rookie third-round pick Shavon Revel at East Carolina, Wood made waves in his rookie training camp before narrowly becoming a casualty in final roster cutdowns, claimed by the Titans following his release from Dallas, but he'll get another shot in 2025.

10:30 a.m. -- It can't be overstated just how impressive the Cowboys' offense was against the Jets, and not simply because Dak Prescott, Javonte Willams and Ryan Flournoy had their way.

None of that would have been possible if not for the high level of play delivered by the offensive line, and one that was down not one, or two, or three, but four starters entering their Week 5 contest in New York, and against a defensive line headlined by All-Pro defensive tackle Quinnen Williams — effectively shut down by Dallas' backup O-line.

So when considering what the Cowboys were able to do in that capacity, Nate Thomas joined others in offering high and deserved praise for offensive coordinator (a former offensive line coach) Klayton Adams and offensive line coach Conor Riley, both in their first season with the Cowboys to begin the Brian Schottenheimer era.

"Yeah, they do a great job, honestly, of just making sure that we are put in the right situations, making sure we prepare, seeing that whatever types of looks they give us, that we can go up there and block it," said Thomas. "Huge shout out to them. They make sure we're prepared every week."

-------------

Oct. 6

12:15 p.m. -- After dealing with widespread injuries that ultimately led to multiple starters and depth players being ruled out on Sunday, could the Cowboys be getting healthier in the near future?

It's possible, according to Cowboys COO/co-owner Stephen Jones on 105.3 The Fan, as the group of CeeDee Lamb, Tyler Booker, Tyler Smith, Tyler Guyton and KaVontae Turpin were among those in a group he said had a chance to be back in the next two weeks.

Guys who might take a little bit longer to return include Malik Hooker, who was place on IR Saturday and needs to miss the next three games at least, as well as Cooper Beebe and DeMarvion Overshown. That said, Jones did say that they would not be looking "a lot past the bye" when it comes to a time those players could be back on the field.

-------------

Oct. 5

5:32 p.m. – When the Cowboys lost middle linebacker Jack Sanborn early in the game to a concussion, it opened the door for rookie Shemar James.

The fifth-round pick apparently didn't need the door open much because he busted right through it, finishing the game with 15 tackles.

It's obviously a career-high for James, who was playing his second game after his debut last week.

It's the most tackles by a Cowboys player since Sean Lee had 17 in a game back in 2015.

-------------

5:21 p.m. – The rookie running back made his debut and got a few touches on offense.

But his biggest contribution occurred in special teams when Blue returned a kickoff 32 yards and nearly broke it open for a huge play.

He had four carries for seven yards but the Cowboys made sure to feed Javonte Williams, who had his best day of the season with 135 rushing yards and two total touchdowns.

-------------

5:17 p.m. -- With a 43-yard touchdown haul over Sauce Gardner on Sunday afternoon in the second half, WR George Pickens now has a team-leading five receiving touchdowns on the season through five games.

Five receiving touchdowns are the most that a wide receiver has caught in their first five games with the team in franchise history.

Pickens finished the day with two receptions for 57 yards and the score.

-------------

5:15 p.m. -- As Dak Prescott continues to play some of the best football of his career, he's also continuing to move up in the franchise history books.

On Sunday, he recorded his 41st three touchdown game in the regular season or the playoffs, passing Tony Romo for the most in franchise history. It was his 12th game with four passing touchdowns, also the most in franchise history.

Last but certainly not least, Prescott passed Romo in career pass attempts (4,354) to move to second place in franchise history.

-------------

1:54 p.m. - Running back Javonte Williams eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the first half, thanks to a 66-yard run at the end of the half.
Williams' run was not only the longest of his career, but the longest since Alfred Morris had a 70-yarder in a 2017 game.

Williams became the first Cowboys player to have five touchdowns this season.

-------------

1:53 p.m. - After playing just a few snaps in the first quarter, linebacker Jack Sanborn left the game and was diagnosed for a concussion.

After walking to the locker room and spending the rest of the half inside, the Cowboys officially ruled Sanborn out for the remainder of the game to start the third quarter.

Sanborn entered the game as the leading tackler with 36 stops on the season. In his place, rookie Shemar James took most of the snaps on defense in Sanborn's place.

-------------

11:30 a.m. -- Jaydon Blue will officially make his NFL debut for the Cowboys when they take on the Jets at MetLife Stadium.

He will see his first action as running back Miles Sanders joins the inactives list in Week 5, due to a knee and ankle injury suffered in the tie game versus the Packers.

The list of inactives features a list of impact talent — all sidelined with injury — headlined by CeeDee Lamb, Tyler Booker, Tyler Guyton and KaVontae Turpin, along with Marshawn Kneeland (ankle injury) and Jay Toia.

Tyler Smith, having missed every practice this week with an ankle injury, is active but expected to be emergency depth for an ailing offensive line.

-------------

Oct. 4

12:35 p.m. -- The Cowboys placed S Malik Hooker (toe) on injured reserve Saturday after Brian Schottenheimer said earlier in the week that his injury would cause him to miss "a couple weeks."

Juanyeh Thomas is set to start in Hooker's place on Sunday, and for the next four weeks at the very least.

Hooker will be eligible to return in Dallas' Week 9 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals on November 3.

-------------

12:34 p.m. -- As a result of Hooker being moved to IR, the Cowboys used the open roster spot to sign UDFA safety Alijah Clark to the active roster.

Clark, one of Dallas' highest-paid UDFA's from the 2025 class out of Syracuse, gives the Cowboys depth at the safety position going forward.

The safety room for the Cowboys will consist of Donovan Wilson, Juanyeh Thomas, Markquese Bell and Clark going forward at least for the next four games.

-------------

12:33 p.m. -- After having their 21-day practice windows opened earlier in the week, WR Jonathan Mingo and CB Caelen Carson will remain on the Reserve/Designated to Return list on Sunday after being ruled as questionable.

The Cowboys elevated WR Jalen Brooks and WR Jalen Cropper for Sunday's game against the New York Jets, both of whom can contribute for the offense and on special teams.

The 21-day window for Mingo and Carson closes on October 22, where the Cowboys will either need to add them to the active roster or place them on season-ending injured reserve.

-------------

Oct. 3

3:14 p.m. - The Cowboys already have two offensive linemen named Tyler that will be out for Sunday's game with the Jets. Right now, Tyler Smith could be a third.

The Cowboys listed Tyler Smith as questionable for the game despite having three straight DNP (Did Not Practice) designations on the injury report as he continues to battle a knee injury.

Both Tyler Booker (ankle) and Tyler Guyton (concussion) have been ruled out for Sunday's game, along with CeeDee Lamb (ankle), KaVontae Turpin (foot) and Malik Hooker (toe).

Along with Tyler Smith, others listed as questionable for the game are Marshawn Kneeland (ankle), Kenneth Murray (knee), Miles Sanders (knee/ankle) and then two still on IR - Jonathan Mingo and Caelen Carson, who both started their 21-day practice windows this week,.

The Cowboys will have to create a roster spot for either Mingo or Carson for them to be activated to the roster and play Sunday.

-------------

11:45 p.m. -- It's beginning to look more and more as if the debut of Jaydon Blue will land this weekend for the Cowboys as they visit the Jets in Week 5.

The rookie running back has been working toward finally taking the field in 2025, and with injury to both Miles Sanders and KaVontae Turpin, the Cowboys will likely look to Blue's speed to help offset the potential losses this weekend.

"It's trending in that direction," said head coach Brian Schottenheimer. "But nothing's final. We'll get through today and the next couple of days but, no matter what it is, it's because of what Jaydon's done. I've been hard on Jaydon in the past — talking about the word consistency — he's been more consistent, showing up and mastering what we're trying to do from an offensive standpoint, and we're real pleased with him."

On the opposite side of that news coin, starting left tackle Tyler Guyton remains in concussion protocol on Friday, putting his availability for Sunday's matchup in New York in very real jeopardy, adding to a list of injury issues across the Cowboys' offensive line.

-------------

Oct. 2

4:00 p.m. -- Second-year Cowboys DE Marshawn Kneeland was added to Dallas' injury report on Thursday, being listed as limited with a knee injury.

Kneeland was the only new addition to the injury report. For the second straight day, all seven of OT Tyler Guyton (concussion), OG Tyler Smith (knee), OG Tyler Booker (ankle), WR CeeDee Lamb (ankle), WR KaVontae Turpin (foot), S Malik Hooker (toe) and RB Miles Sanders (knee/ankle) did not practice.

Also for the second straight day, CBs Trevon Diggs (knee) and Caelen Carson (knee), WR Jonathan Mingo (knee) and LB Kenneth Murray (knee) were limited in practice. Cornerback DaRon Bland (foot) was the lone full participant once again.

The Cowboys have now only gotten more banged up as they prepare for a tough road test against an 0-4 Jets team that's hungry for a victory. The only change for New York on their injury report was placing RB Braelon Allen (knee) on injured reserve.

-------------

3:50 p.m. -- Earlier on Thursday, Cowboys defensive coordinator confirmed that safety Juanyeh Thomas would get the start for Dallas this week as Malik Hooker nurses a toe injury. It'll be the second career defensive start for Thomas, who came in late against the Packers after Hooker's injury and played 49 snaps at safety.

""It's something I've been practicing for," Thomas said on Wednesday. "I know my role, I prep like a starter every week, so this is nothing different... This was a chance for me to come in and see if I can help. Like I said, I practice for this moment. I won't do anything different, I'll just see what I can do."

It'll also be a big moment for the Thomas family as Juanyeh will play against his younger brother, Jets rookie CB Azareye'h Thomas, for the first time.

"The day after he got drafted, we were just sitting there talking like 'Man, we used to dream, we used to talk about this, we used to train for this.' Now, it's just crazy." Thomas said.

-------------

3:45 p.m. -- Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs admitted that he had a "rough week" leading up to Dallas' Week 4 game against Green Bay. As a result, he did not start for the Cowboys and instead, Kaiir Elam and DaRon Bland handled the cornerback duties on the outside with Reddy Stewart in the slot.

"I guess coach was holding me accountable, and I accept it," Diggs said on Wednesday. "It's cool. [I'm] back on track this week and ready to work. Just a rough week."

As the team heads into Week 5 against the Jets, Diggs expects to start again in New York, with the chance to once again share the outside corner spot with Bland and keep Stewart inside. If not, it'll likely be Diggs and Elam on the outside, with Bland in the slot.

-------------

Oct. 1

3:45 p.m. -- The Cowboys had a much longer injury report on Wednesday than they have in previous weeks, with a total of 11 players that were either listed as DNP or limited in practice. One of the more interesting names to pop up was OG Tyler Smith, who played the entire game against Green Bay in Week 4, not being at practice with a knee injury.

In addition to Smith, OG Tyler Booker (ankle), OT Tyler Guyton (concussion), S Malik Hooker (toe), WR CeeDee Lamb (ankle), RB Miles Sanders (knee/ankle) and WR KaVontae Turpin (foot) all did not practice. Cornerback Trevon Diggs (knee) and LB Kenneth Murray (knee) were limited, along with CB Caelen Carson (knee) and WR Jonathan Mingo (knee), who both had their 21-day practice window from IR opened on Wednesday.

Brian Schottenheimer said in his press conference earlier on Wednesday afternoon that his team was "banged up," and injuries to Smith and Turpin that have come following a game they fully participated in are evidence for that being the case.

-------------

Sept. 30

12:45 p.m. -- Parris Campbell is returning to sign with the Cowboys for a second time in 2025.

The veteran wide receiver will be added to the team's practice squad ahead of the Week 5 preparation to take on the New York Jets, his first stint with the team having come this summer, before going down with injury in training camp.

He was then waived with an injury settlement, but has since been medically cleared to return.

Campbell takes the seat vacated by linebacker Buddy Johnson, who was signed away from the Cowboys' practice squad by the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday.

-------------

10:00 a.m. -- Cowboys rookie running back Jaydon Blue has been a healthy inactive for Dallas' first four games of the season, with Dallas loading up a little bit more on the defensive side of the ball with their game day roster given some injuries. There's been a lot of conversation surrounding when Blue could be finally made active, and Brian Schottenheimer says that Blue is "very close" to getting there.

"I challenged him a few weeks ago on being consistent. He's done that," Schottenheimer said. "He's becoming one of our best offensive practice squad players. He gives the defense an incredible look with his speed and playmaking ability, so very close."

Veteran running back Miles Sanders, who has gotten the next most carries behind Javonte Williams for the Cowboys this season, left Sunday's game early with an ankle injury. Schottenheimer said that it was minor and Sanders will have a chance to play on Sunday against the Jets. Even if he does, could the Cowboys make Blue active just in case?

-------------

Sept. 29

5:00 p.m. -- On Monday, Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer gave several injury updates, including that as it stands, the team does not play to place WR CeeDee Lamb or OL Tyler Booker, who both have a high ankle sprain, on injured reserve. He added that both are "trending in the right direction," but that the team reserves the right to change their minds.

In Sunday's tie against Green Bay, OT Tyler Guyton went out with a concussion and is in the league's protocol, but Schottenheimer said he'll have a chance to play next week against the Jets. Safety Malik Hooker (toe) has an injury that could sideline him a couple of weeks, meaning that the Cowboys will likely see a lot of Juanyeh Thomas in his place at safety in the mean time. Lastly, RB Miles Sanders (ankle) had most tests come back clean and is trending towards being available to play against the Jets.

As the Cowboys move past the fourth week of the season, they can now begin to open the 21-day practice windows for players that started the season on injured reserve and the PUP & NFI lists. That includes players like CB Shavon Revel, RB Phil Mafah, WR Jonathan Mingo and CB Caelen Carson among others. Schottenheimer said the team will have conversations tonight and into tomorrow on whose windows could be opened this week.

-------------

9:22 a.m. — Over anything else, Dak Prescott would've liked to get the win over the Packers in Micah's return to AT&T Stadium and to even the record at 2-2.

So a tie was still rather disappointing for the Cowboys quarterback, but in his 10th season, it's no surprise that he keeps piling on the records. On Sunday, Dak passed Troy Aikman (2,898) for most completions in franchise history. Dak had 31 completions on 40 attempts, giving him 2,901 now for his career.

He also extended his franchise record with 22 games with a rushing and passing touchdown, the most by any Cowboys quarterback.

When asked about the milestones, Dak toed the line on being respectful to the legends before him but also knowing the most important goal of being a quarterback for the Cowboys.

"It's awesome. It's something I never take for granted," Dak said about records. "It's not something that I'm patting myself on the back for, but it's something that I understand the history before me. I understand the players who have come before me and it's an honor, but at the end of the day I want to win games and I want to chase Roger (Staubach) and Troy (Aikman) and the accomplishments they have.

-------------

9:04 a.m. — For the first time since catching three TDs in the playoff loss to the Packers, Jake Ferguson found the end zone. And of course, it's against the Packers at AT&T Stadium.

But for a guy who didn't catch a single touchdown in 2024 and not one in the first three games this year, Ferguson was glad to be back in the end zone yet again, catching a third-quarter score Sunday night.

However, Ferguson's biggest accomplishment has been in the overall receptions. He now has 34 this year, the most in NFL history by a tight end in the first four games. It's also the second-most by any Cowboys player after four games behind Amari Cooper, who had 37 in 2020.
