Why have the Cowboys not yet addressed linebacker in free agency or with a trade? This was a glaring weakness last season. How concerned should we be? – Rich Levinson/Bakersfield, CA

Mickey: They should be very concerned, and an inside linebacker to pair with DeMarvion Overshown must be of high priority the remainder of free agency and heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. At this point, inside linebacker candidates with rights to on the current roster consist of Overshown, Shemar James and Justin Barron, the latter two mere rookies this past season. The Cowboys have a definite need for a true middle linebacker to play inside on the base 3-4 scheme, a guy who can direct traffic, make the adjustments and ball out against the run. The remaining field in free agency is pretty slim, and the majority of the proven guys are in their 30s and probably looking for a deal to convince them to play another season. And yes, that position was a weakness this past season. They sorely need a Sean Lee/Leighton Vander Esch type to man the middle.

Tommy: Well, if the season started tomorrow they should be very concerned because they don't have much there at all. The good thing is there's still plenty of time to make additions. I think back to last season when the Cowboys were in desperate need of another wide receiver to pair with CeeDee Lamb. Going into free agency, there was talk about who they could add there. Parris Campbell was the only free agent signing Dallas made, and he wasn't going to fit that role. Going into the draft, wide receiver was on a lot of people's minds with the 12th overall pick, until Arizona's Tetairoa McMillan got taken by the Panthers. So what'd they do? Made a trade for George Pickens after the draft, and that worked out pretty well. Now, every situation is different, no doubt. But the Cowboys have shown that if they don't find the right guy in free agency or the draft, they're willing to make a move before the season begins to fill that gap.
