Mailbag: Could Lance contribute to offense?

10_17_Mailbag

Trey Lance seems to be the Cowboys' most explosive runner, so why not make him the backup quarterback on game days and build in some read options or running plays to see what he can do? The only time Cooper Rush is going to step on the field is in a blowout win or loss – time that could also be used to give Lance some much-needed game experience. Why have Rush standing around on the sideline in the unlikely event Dak Prescott is hurt? If he is, Lance could at least get them through one game. – Anthony Robertson/Dallas, TX

Patrik: I understand the thought here, given what Lance was able to show in the preseason with his legs and, at times, with his arm. The problem is Cooper Rush has the better arm, and that means in a situation wherein an injury occurs, you've now got the better runner at quarterback while the better thrower is unable to enter the game — seeing as the emergency quarterback can only play if both of the active QBs are injured. It doesn't feel as if that's a risk the Cowboys want to take when Rush has shown he can win games in this league. So, again, I get the thought and if it were a situation wherein the Cowboys carried three active QBs into a game (don't hold your breath there, because it means they'd have to run one man short at another position), then sure, this could work; but it isn't, so I don't see how it could.

Tommy: At this point in time, I don't see Trey Lance making any sort of difference in the Cowboys offense. That's not to say Lance can't be a great player one day, but I don't think the Cowboys would lean on him over Cooper Rush if for whatever reason it was needed. Rush has won this team games when they've needed him to, and we've seen no reason to believe that he can't do that again. Sure, some late game snaps would be nice to get him warmed back up to being in an NFL game, but how valuable are those reps going to be for his development if he'd likely come in during a blowout and face the opposing teams backups? I think the best thing for Lance's development right now is to soak up as much as he can from two veteran quarterbacks in Dak Prescott and Rush, marinate in the offense, and then when the time comes have him be as prepared and comfortable as possible with the playbook and personnel before asking him to take over the reins of the offense in any capacity.
