With Jake Ferguson coming off somewhat of a down season, can you see Luke Schoonmaker challenging him for the starting tight end position? – Reuben Johnson/Nashville, TN
Patrik: I do believe there's potential for Schoonmaker to be a solid starter in the league for a team that utilizes his skill set in such a way as to maximize that fit, but it's also true that Jake Ferguson owns attributes better suited to what Brian Schottenheimer and the Cowboys are hoping to get from a TE1 — e.g., YAC ability. Schoonmaker made major strides in 2024, when Ferguson dealt with a knee injury and a concussion, and he deserves roses for the work he's put in, and I'm interested to see if he can level up that much more so in Year 3. But I believe, for Schoonmaker, this season will be more about trying to keep Brevyn Spann-Ford at bay in the battle for TE2; and that Ferguson will reunite with a healthy Dak Prescott, and in a contract year, no less, to show why he deserves to keep the crown he once took away from Dalton Schultz.
Tommy: Schoonmaker can still make a push, sure, but I think Jake Ferguson is still sitting pretty comfortably as the starting tight end for right now. He didn't have the best 2024 season, but he also didn't have Dak Prescott for the majority of it, and that's not the only reason for his struggles but it definitely is one. While Schoonmaker was and has been handling most of the TE2 responsibilities, don't rule out Brevyn Spann-Ford pushing for more snaps too. He's looked good through OTAs and minicamp, and if he works on the receiving element of his game, he can become a real threat for the Cowboys offense.
