We heard Jerry Jones talk about drafting Tyler Booker in part because of the defensive tackles the Cowboys will face in the NFC East. But should the Cowboys be building their roster and schemes around defeating their NFC East rivals? What about the Lions? 49ers? Isn't it better to focus on yourself and not worry about any particular team? After all, things change quickly in the NFL.– John Gorrie/Rowlett, TX**
Mickey: Well, first of all John just remember the Cowboys must play six games against their NFC East opponents, and if you can't get through your division, chances are you'll never get to the playoffs, although the Cowboys do have to play a regular season game at Detroit. And not sure what you wanted the Cowboys to do as the draft unfolded, but as we know, no matter what, your offensive line does travel, and that means no matter who or where you are playing. Read my Friday column to further understand the reasoning for using such a high draft choice on a guard. They pointed out the DTs they must face in the NFC East, but there were more reasons than that to rebuild this offensive line.
Tommy: You're absolutely right that you shouldn't focus on beating only three teams. That said, when you think about the best teams in the NFL year in and year out, what's a big reason for their success? Usually, it's based around the line of scrimmage on offense and defense. That's where the game of football is won, regardless of which level you play at. Obviously you have to build around that, and the Cowboys still have work to do in that department, but they emphasized it heavily in this draft class which is never a bad thing.
