What are your thoughts after this first wave of free agency? Are you pleased with what the Cowboys have done, or does it feel like business as usual? – Ronald Williams/Dallas, TX

Patrik: I graded the first day of legal tampering as a C (the irony, I know ... lol). The Cowboys landed Rashan Gary, a solid B+ that I feel needs a sweetener at the edge and, as such, can't be graded as an A or higher. The signing of Jalen Thompson is an A+ for me, in every possible way. The effort to acquire Nakobe Dean was valiant and went to the wire, which I love (but you can't force a guy to take your offer, even if it's the same offer); but, fact is, linebacker was not addressed during legal tampering, and neither was cornerback — so that's a failing grade for both positions in the first wave.

It wasn't business as usual, at all, considering how active they were right out of the gate and who they acquired. Their misses (Dean, Crosby) hurt though, as does watching a guy like Riq Woolen go off the board with a list of impact linebackers. I am pleased with some things, displeased with others.

Tommy: I think the Cowboys have raised the floor of their defense with the moves that they made last week. Did they make a multitude of massive splash signings and trades? No. Did they acquire players that elevate the position rooms they've joined? I think so. Now, that isn't very difficult to do when your defense gives up the most points in franchise history in 2025, but Dallas knew what they needed to do to help Christian Parker and took some steps towards doing it.

It's important to remember we're only a week into this process, and that there's still a lot of work that needs to be done. The good news for the Cowboys is they've got two first round picks in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft that they can do a lot of different things with, and as a result of the Osa Odighizuwa trade, acquired the 92nd overall pick. That's solid capital, and if they make it count, it can go a long way in taking the next step. Don't get it twisted though, I still think there's a lot of improvement needed on defense if this team wants to reach their goals.
