Is it safe to say that after this loss to Carolina, trading any draft capital in the attempt to improve this defense is a bad decision? This is not a one player fix. Your thoughts? – Dallas Smith/Warwick, RI

Mickey: Well, let's first remember there are three games between now and the Nov. 4 trade deadline, so a lot could change by then. You are right, the Cowboys at this point, sitting there at 2-3-1, are more than one player away from improving the overall team, and also remember the Cowboys have reserve list reinforcements on the way, like CeeDee Lamb, KaVontae Turpin, Tyler Booker, Cooper Beebe, DeMarvion Overshown, Shavon Revel, Josh Butler, Caelen Carson and Jonathan Mingo. So, a lot could happen between now and the 4th. But at least Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has said, "If there was a trade to help the defense, we would make that trade." And at least this year they have the draft capital and the salary cap room to make any trade that would be deemed reasonable. Eyes wide open.

Tommy: I think it depends on what kind of trade you make, but in my humble opinion, I don't really see any move that the Cowboys could make right now that would drastically change their defense from top to bottom and move them from the bottom of the league to even average. I just think they're too many players away right now. That's why that draft capital is so important, and why I think that two first-round picks can help you take those steps in the right direction while not needing to move off any valuable "ammo," as Jerry Jones called it. Need an example? Look at the Atlanta Falcons, who couldn't get to the quarterback at all in 2024. They go into the 2025 draft, pick two pass rushers in the first round, and all of the sudden are 11th in the league in sacks and first in yards allowed per game this season. And it wasn't just those two: Atlanta found two more defensive contributors in Xavier Watts and Billy Bowman in the later rounds that have panned out too. There's an element of luck to it for sure, but I think the best chance that Dallas has to improve their defense in the short and long term is to trust Will McClay and the scouting department to find them difference makers, and they've got plenty of picks to do so.
