I love the re-signing of Javonte Williams, but what does this mean for the young running backs Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah? – Chris Peterson/*Dallas*, TX

Nick: Right now, they have to prove they're the best option as backups. That didn't exactly happen last year as Malik Davis proved over the course of the year that he was the better change-of-pace backup for Williams.

But to be fair, Davis is not a rookie anymore and his development hasn't exactly been an overnight success either. Davis is still under contract for 2026 and so for me, that's where I start to address this question. Sure, the signing for Williams is the biggest news for the position but after him, it's going to be interesting to see where these young backs land.

If Blue and Mafah take the kind of leap you expect from players entering their second seasons, then they could easily jump into the conversation for the backup role. The guy the Cowboys would love to see do that is Blue, who has speed and quickness that separates him from any other back on the roster, icnldiuing Williams. But he's got to show that he is ready for a bigger workload. Who knows if the Cowboys decide to draft another back as well, but if not, there should be plenty of competition already in place.
