Mailbag: What's The Projection For The Left Guard Position?

With all the talk about Mackenzy Bernadeau taking snaps at center and left guard, I haven't seen much on Ron Leary except how low his rating score was for last year. How's he doing this year? Will he even make the team if Bernadeau makes the switch to left guard?

David: I'd be stunned if either Bernadeau or Leary didn't make the team at all – it's not like the Cowboys have absurd amounts of depth, after all. I'm not sure it's safe to say either of them has a secured starting job, though. One thing we've mentioned is that Bernadeau's ability to play both guard and center might make him a more appealing backup, whereas Leary might be a little less flexible and therefore more likely to stay in place.

Rowan: I'd say at this moment it'd be most likely for Leary to be the starter at left guard. With questions like, "How's _ doing," it's really difficult to answer because there's no pads on. It's tough for any lineman to stand out or look poor when they're not all out in pads. I predict both players make the team.

What are the chances that when the "pads come on" Will Smith earns a role other than special teams work?

David: With this team, who can honestly say? I didn't have high expectations that DeVonte Holloman would see defensive work as a rookie, but injuries pressed him into it and he played admirably. The same can be said here. I'm not expecting much from Smith, or really any of his seventh-round classmates. But who knows what their own abilities, combined with an opportunity, could produce?

Rowan: Again, way too early to tell. Without the pads on, we don't know how good he is and he can't really stand out in our short visits when we see the team on the field. It's possible he gets more work than special teams, but that can't be answered at this moment. He will have to shine on special teams, though.
