Like many other fans, I was hoping the Cowboys would give Brandon Aubrey a shot at kicking a 67-yard field goal to break the NFL record. It was late in a game that was already well in hand, so why not? Are we that worried about hurting the other team's feelings? – Freddie Martin/San Antonio, TX

Mickey: Well, if you must know there were fans at AT&T on Sunday chanting "Aubrey, Aubrey" when the Cowboys were facing that fourth-and-11 at the Washington 49, hoping the third-year kicker would be given a chance at an NFL record 67-yard field goal with 6:57 left in a game the Cowboys were leading 44-22. But head coach Brian Schottenheimer, respecting the game, figured that such a record should be recorded organically, like when the kick would be meaningful to the outcome of the game, not just to go out to set a record. Believe me, at some point this season the Cowboys will need a field goal beyond the NFL record 65 yards, and Aubrey will get his chance. And look, getting one there from 70 yards for Aubrey will be no problem. The challenge will be to get in there accurately. And know he had somewhat of a running start, but did you see Aubrey's free klick after the Washington safety from the 20 reaching the goal line? Matter of time.

Tommy: I think in part, you sort of answered your own question. It was late in a game that was already well in hand. Kicks of that distance are usually going to require and extra half second to a full second of blocking, which also means an extra second or so for defenders to get after your kicker, and the absolute last thing that Dallas needs is for something to happen to Brandon Aubrey. That's a worst case scenario way of looking at it, but it's the way you have to when you have an All-Pro kicker and are seven games into the season. It hasn't happened yet, but I don't think it'll take long for Brandon Aubrey to get the NFL record. In fact, I don't think it'll be long before he gets the chance to kick a 70-yarder, and he's got a good chance at making it too.
