Mailbag: Would Cowboys draft offense at 12?

I know the Cowboys' goal is defense, defense and more defense in this draft, but what happens if by more than one miracle running back Jeremiyah Love or one of the top offensive tackles is available at No. 12? What do the Cowboys do? – Walter DeBell/Troy, NY

Patrik: First, I hope not. Second, I don't believe they'd pull that trigger unless, for some reason, they're wiped out before going on the clock at 12th-overall but, even then, there's the option to bail and find a buyer who wants that slot — potentially moving down a few spots to still have two first-round picks but to also possibly gain a second-rounder (they've got their third-round pick now, by way of the Osa Odighizuwa trade). The optics alone would be egregious, given what the defense was last year and the need to revamp it for Christian Parker's blueprint. I'd be floored, and I do mean floored, if they went offense at No. 12.

Tommy: I think they'd have to be wiped off all of their top players on defense in order for that to happen. Could it end up being the case? Yes, and if so, I don't think I would be totally shocked if an offensive player, which I would likely lean towards an offensive lineman like Francis Mauigoa from Miami. That said, the way the rest of the draft order shakes out, I find it hard to believe there'll be a scenario where Dallas is completely wiped out of all the top defensive talent they'll have on their board. Or, they can always try and package some capital to move up and get their guy if he's still on the board at a certain pick to boost the defense.
