Just for giggles, if you were going to trade pick 12 or 20, do you do it now or wait until the draft is happening? I get that if someone is desperate enough during the draft you might get a better deal, but if you trade one now, then you know for sure you are getting a couple of Day 2 picks and still have the chance to trade again on draft day if you wish. Perhaps it would help how you attack free agency as well? – Gary Hemming/Blackshear, GA
Mickey: Uh, that is a pretty funny giggle. Heck no, you don't trade either of those first round picks now. No way. First of all, those picks are much more valuable during the draft when teams become more desperate if they see a player they just must have – what if it's a quarterback – and you are in front of them. Why you'd have 'em hostage, and if a QB the price goes up. Plus, you don't trade those picks now because what if a player you least expect is falling to you in the first round and you already traded that pick away. You'd kick yourself for a premature move. And the only way you would trade down in the first round anyway, and first depending how far, you would need to have a range of first round picks still on the board that you wouldn't mind ending up with. But thanks anyway for the giggle.
Tommy: Trade on draft day for me, because of the exact reason that you outlined. There's a better chance that teams may be willing to give up more draft capital if they feel the Cowboys, or a team between Dallas and the team calling inquiring about trading up, takes the player they really want. I think there are several scenarios that could unfold on the first night where the Cowboys might even want to move back if some of their big targets are off the table, which makes it all the more enticing of an option if someone is calling Dallas' draft room. Plus, you have your free agency picture in place as well, so it can dictate some more of what you want to do. Regardless of what they do in free agency, I don't think this team would have any issue making a trade that helps them get more players, or move a pick for an existing player IF what the offer is right.
