Mailbag: Big Jump At DE? Entering FA Market?

I am curious about what your expectations are for Dorance Armstrong for the coming season. Felt like he showed some flashes last season. Wondering if you expect him to make a significant jump this year? - BRYAN CASE / NEWARK, DE

Bryan: I do expect that we'll see a better Armstrong this season. A year with the coaches and an offseason program always helps these young players. Can say the same about Connor Williams and Michael Gallup. Experience and physical growth give you a chance.

Rob: Remember, Armstrong was a very young rookie. He doesn't turn 22 until this summer. He was inactive in both playoff games, but he did show pass rush ability from big edge spots at points during the season. The Cowboys like his potential.

Now that the first wave is slowing, do you expect the Cowboys to enter the market? T.J. Yeldon and Isaiah Crowell look like good candidates for backup RB and Ndamukong Suh or Ziggy Ansah might be good one- or two-year insurance until a young player can develop. - VINCE RICHARDSON / MOBILE, AL

Bryan: I like the idea of adding a player or two now that free agency has settled down. If they go that route I could see a wide receiver being added or a defensive lineman. Not sure that they add a big fish like Suh or Ansah but someone that could help with the depth.

Rob: Not sure about those specific names, but receiver Randall Cobb is taking a visit to the Cowboys, and he's the type of free agent they've targeted in recent years: a very good, productive player who's still out there after the first wave. I still think the draft is the most logical route for adding a backup running back. Christian Covington helps with the D-Line depth, but I agree with Bryan — they still need to be looking there.
