With what we have seen in free agency so far, I feel that (once again) the Cowboys have no real intention of signing players who would help them truly compete for a Super Bowl. Do the Cowboys still need to make a big splash to convince us this team is really heading in the right direction? – Chris Blackburn/Dublin, VA
Mickey: We'll not sure at this point making as you say "a big splash" in free agency will occur since the majority of available "big splash" free agents are pretty much picked over. Now the Cowboys will keep their eye out for an available middle linebacker but probably don't want to pay an arm and a leg for a veteran out there in his 30s looking for a huge contract. But, they likely will keep their eye out for a possible trade, but not with one of their first-round draft choices that would maybe be for a placeholder. And as the NFL Draft nears, that "splash" would need to take place with one of their two first-round picks.
Tommy: Well, frankly I don't see any free agents currently on the board that I would consider big splashes, so if that's what you're waiting for, I think you'll end up disappointed. The only places I could see them making a splash would be in the trade market. Whether that be for a player or moving things around in the draft, that's really the only chance I would expect to see a big splash type of move being made. The better question may be how possible it is that a move like that is made. With a need at linebacker, there could definitely be a move at some point to look to fill that gap, but there are also other areas on the roster that could use supplementing.
