Mailbag: Creating O-Line Competition? LB Depth Behind Jaylon Smith?

MILES GHORBANIANVIENNA, VA

With competition reigning supreme, would it be fair to presume that trying La'el Collins at right tackle is more of a ploy to create competition for Byron Bell and Chaz Green rather than an actual solution in the coaches' mind?

Rob: OK, if that's your line of thinking, then where's the competition for Jonathan Cooper at guard? They're just trying to get their best five linemen on the field. You've got three All-Pros and then Collins, who can play guard or tackle. To me, which spot Collins plays might very well depend on who's the best between Bell, Green and Cooper.

Bryan:No, I don't think so. Jerry Jones said on Wednesday that he's looking for his best five. Whatever combination that they come out of camp with should be that.

I am still very skeptical that Jaylon Smith will be able to play much this season. I know Anthony Hitchens typically plays the middle linebacker position. What are your thoughts about Mark Nzeocha playing the Mike position?

Rob:Nzeocha is a big linebacker who can run, and those traits are important for the Mike position in this scheme. I think first and foremost he has a chance to step into the role Andrew Gachkar had here: core special-teamer who can play multiple linebacker spots. Hitchens did a nice job at the Mike last year. And it's just too early to say what type of role Smith will have this year.

Bryan:That's the position that Nzeocha plays and has played. His biggest issue has been his ability to stay healthy. They had high hopes for him last season and that has carried over to this one.
