Mailbag: Gallup's Ceiling? Backup CB Battles?

Gallup

MIKE HILL
There has been a lot of talk about the corners at the top of the roster, but how have the players battling to be CB5 or 6 been playing? Is there an early favorite between Marquez White, Duke Thomas or another candidate?

Bryan: Both White and Thomas played better on Thursday. The guy I have been watching has been Donovan Olumba - nicknamed "Sherman" like the 49ers' Richard Sherman. He's long and rangy with some playmaking ability.

Rob: Olumba has stood out, like Bryan said, and he has Kris Richard's prototype frame for a corner. So does White, and I still think he has a chance to stand out in these preseason games and win a job. I like his physicality at the position.

Seeing the Vikings' Stefon Diggs getting paid this week and knowing that he was a fifth-round pick makes me feel encouraged about drafting Michael Gallup, who I see as a better receiver "coming out of the draft." What kind of ceiling would you say Gallup has from what you've seen so far? He sure looks good out there in training camp.

Bryan: He was one of my Top 50 players in the draft. Like I've thought, they have thrown him in the deep end of the pool. Been getting a ton of snaps. Has been good and bad but learning every day. Has a chance to be special once everything comes together.

Rob: Gallup has a chance to be a productive starter in this league. Very fluid route runner and explosive off the line of scrimmage. He's had some drops, but he's also made some extremely tough receptions and shown a wide catch radius.
