Mailbag: Taking A Closer Look At Safety Depth?

_DSC2351

Looking at the current roster, the only free safety I see on the team other than Xavier Woods is Darian Thompson. We did not address the backup safety position in free agency or the draft. Do you think the team will sign another free safety in the offseason or convert a strong safety or cornerback already on the roster to play the position? - MARCUS JONES / MEMPHIS, TN

Bryan: Darian Thompson has actually looked good in these OTAs. Was told he had an interception of Cooper Rush during team period on Monday. I wouldn't get too caught up in free and strong safeties. They like to tell you that they're able to switch these guys out. That's always been their plan when putting together their roster.

Rob: Indications are that they feel good about their overall safety depth. Jeff Heath, the projected starting strong safety, is capable of switching to free safety if needed. Free agent addition George Iloka has played strong and free safety over his career. Sixth-round pick Donovan Wilson is more of a strong safety prospect, but he's a fluid athlete and might have some position flex.

I know it's only OTA's, but how has Cedrick Wilson looked? Since he was on IR all of his rookie season it's like this is really his rookie year playing wise. - STEVE THOMAS / ALFRED, ME

Bryan: Cedrick Wilson has a long fight ahead. The talent at the position is better overall, so trying to land that final spot won't be easy. It's going to take a big training camp for him to land on this roster. He has the ability, but if he ended up on the practice squad it would be a good spot.

Rob: I spoke to Wilson recently. His shoulder is feeling good after missing all last season with the subluxation that required surgery. His goal is to learn all three receiver spots and be as versatile as possible. The receiver group is deep, but the Cowboys did like his progress before the injury early in training camp last year.
